Chess is an international game of strategy played by two people on a 64 square board of alternating colors using 16 pieces each. The rules can seem arbitrary to a beginner but are actually the product of more than 1,000 years of tinkering and refining. In this introductory chess class, all are welcome to learn the basics of gameplay. Even if you have never touched a chess piece before. You will be introduced to the pieces and their movements, receive handouts and instruction before battling against a partner at the end of class. From this class, new chess players are invited to continue learning, practicing, and refining their skills by enrolling in Chess Club.

Instructor Dwight Ford is the current President of the Anatoly Karpov School of Chess in Lindsborg.  He helps with teaching kids and adults beginning chess fundamentals and tactics. He manages the "Social Chess Hour" in Lindsborg on Monday evenings for adults and is a volunteer with the Salina Area Chess Club. He teaches a tactics class in the fall for middle school-aged youth.
