Join us for a film screening and discussion of Picture A Scientist at the Salina Art Cinema.

TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE AT THE LIBRARY INFORMATION DESK.

The film chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we encounter scientific luminaries - including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists - who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.

A discussion led by KWU Professor Elizabeth Tharman will follow the screening.  Elizabeth Tharman is an assistant professor for the biology department at Kansas Wesleyan University. Prior to her time as an educator, she completed her Master of Science degree in biology at Fort Hays State University in 2017 where she compiled data related to bird breeding behaviors, location of occurrence, and evolutionary relatedness of the species in question. Using this data, she sought to understand the links between behavioral ecology, biogeography, and phylogenetics. Elizabeth obtained her Bachelor of Science Degree from Benedictine College in 2012. During her time there, she completed entomology research along the Missouri River under an initiative headed by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers to assess the impacts of the river’s channelization. At that time, she was also a member of the research team that travelled to the Amazon Rainforest to study the impacts of human habitation on native animal biodiversity.
