Nonfiction writing has changed over the years. While it once exclusively emphasized subject over form, now you can write for story. But, what does that mean? In Creative Nonfiction writing you don’t make things up, but you do employ some techniques of fiction, like cause and effect, imagery, tension, and strong verbs. We’ll discuss the genre and look at examples and do a little writing. Bring pencil and paper and a family story idea.
A former English teacher, Judy Lilly was the Kansas history librarian at the Salina Public Library for twenty years. She spent the past forty-five years researching writing local and family history. After six years of writing Smoky Valley Roots in the Salina Journal, she published a collection of articles called Voices from the Valley. Other writings include, The Graves Truck Line Story and The Jayhawking of Salina, which was funded in part from Horizons, a private donor group through the Salina Arts and Humanities.
