Program Description

Event Details

This workshop focuses on building personal and communal skills for engaging in healthy dialogue, emphasizing the importance of understanding one another to address deep-seated challenges. Participants will learn the principles of civil discourse, including its role in enhancing understanding, managing conflict, and fostering collaboration within diverse communities. Through interactive training, the course aims to develop skills in navigating contentious issues, prioritizing values over winning arguments, and creating sacred spaces for healthy conflict resolution.

Workshop leader Alan Yarborough has nine years of advocacy experience with The Episcopal Church Office of Government Relations in Washington, D.C., where he oversees policy areas such as voting rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and racial justice. He develops advocacy resources, conducts trainings across the U.S., and created the online civil discourse class “Make Me an Instrument of Peace.” Alan also coaches groups on voter engagement and community advocacy, and served as a Better Arguments Ambassador in 2023 with the Aspen Institute.

The workshop is a collaboration between Kansas Wesleyan's Community Resilience Hub and Salina Public Library.

Dr. Kelly Moore, DSW, LMSW, will offer 2 CEU credits for social workers and other professionals.
